The Pro Bono Project’s mission has always been and continues to be to engage the volunteer attorney to render pro bono services. But Hurricanes Katrina and Rita not only affected our client’s lives, it affected the lives of our dedicated local volunteer panel. As a result, The Pro Bono Project began to engage volunteers nationally to supplement our local volunteer base. The largest group of out-of-state volunteers has come from our nation’s law schools.
Since December 2005, The Pro Bono Project has hosted more than 300 law students from around the country. These students have traveled to New Orleans, committed to helping the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the one way they are able … by volunteering their time, more than 1500 hours so far, to provide legal services. Their time and energy is a vital component which enables us to continue providing our clients with legal assistance and resolution of their legal issues. To continue to enlist the talent of these valuable out-of state volunteers, our need for additional space and equipment has heightened.
The Challenge:
Our current offices at 615 Baronne are at capacity. Since August 2005 we have hired five additional staff attorneys and committed to several new programs including Family Law and Employment Law. As a result, we leased a portion of an adjoining office in May 2006 and immediately out-grew our additional space. We now must lease the remainder of available space.
The Solution:
In order for The Pro Bono Project to lease the remaining space and run data and telephone cables, it will cost $30,000. This will cover the lease costs for a period of twelve months and allow us to equip the space with phone and data outlets so that we can better support our staff and out-of-state volunteers. The six additional small offices will house our staff attorneys and two large rooms will house rotating groups of law students and out-of-state attorneys from around the country.
